The Floodgate Foundation

THE PEOPLE – Pastor Matias is a very humble man, who leads a small Christian congregation in El Salvador.  His heart is not only to share the Gospel of Jesus, but to give young men in his congregation a real-life employable skill.

THE PRIMARY CHALLENGE – The parts, supplies, and tools needed to train these young men cost money – something Pastor Matias isn’t rolling in.

THE PROJECT – Pastor Matias is a gifted welder.  Specifically, he creates wrought iron art – the likes of which adorn fences, windows, and gates.  The Pastor will train young men under his care in this artistic endeavor.  This definitely falls into the “teach a man to fish…” category.

THE COST – $4,000.

THE PEOPLE – Every partnership on this website has been entered into with an extremely poor community.  The El Salvadorian community of El Nance represents the poorest of the poor.  The people from this community were promised a clean water well in 2007, only to dig over 200 meters with no water found anywhere.  As we met with the community leaders, there was little hope to be found.  Their eyes proved it.

THE PRIMARY CHALLENGE – At this point, because of the bacteria in their drinking water, much of the community suffers continually from diaherra.  The long-term answer will be to route the water from a nearby river through a filtration system, and up the hill to their community.  But the cost for that is outrageous ($150,000).

THE PROJECT – This community needs help yesterday, so we’re purchasing a pump that will route river water into a crop field.  At this point, there is no business plan for selling the crops they grow.  They’re not ready for that yet.  At this point, it’s triage -  we simply need to stop the immediate bleeding by helping them grow their own crops year-round.  Then, they’ll give those crops freely to everyone in the El Nance Community.  And we’ll continue to purchase seeds for every new season, until a miracle happens with the water situation.

THE COST – $3000.

The Floodgate Foundation doesn’t provide clean water well digging opportunities, but partners with Living Water International. LWI allows you to choose a week, then travel with them to a Third World Country, and dig a clean water well that will impact the community for life. The Team from LWI is simply amazing, experienced, and full of people who are experts in this area.

THE PEOPLE – The Costa Brava Community is by far the most organized group we’re working with. They have the right leaders in the right places.  They ask all the right questions, and are committed to their vision of creating a large, sustainable business in their community.  The leadership includes older men and women, but also several 20-something young men, too.  This group possesses a world of potential.

THE PRIMARY CHALLENGE – Obviously, the primary challenge for this community has nothing to do with vision or mission.  It’s money.  And it’s a huge amount they’re asking for.  And we’re fine with that.

THE PROJECT – The leadership team of Costa Brava wants to create a Tilapia Farm.  Here’s the amazing part of this project:  An overtly Christian government official attended the initial meeting with us, and offered a 99-year free lease on the land needed to build the lake.  He also offered a bull-dozer to dig the lakes.  Wow.  Building a Tilapia Farm requires that three lakes are built, not just one.  The community will raise the fish, then sell it to neighboring communities.  This project will even employ one (or two?) full-time workers from the community.

THE COST – $20,000.

THE PEOPLE – The El Maguey Community in El Salvador sits two miles off the main road.  There’s a strong group of women in this community (meet them here).  When we met with her and the team, she had a comprehensive plan (with a budget) for the formation of a chicken farm business.

THE PROJECT – The project has been fully funded and is currently under construction. Guadalupe and her team of leaders are building a chicken farm, on a plot of land near a river.   They’ll start the business with 200 chickens, growing them from chicks.  They’ll sell them to her community (at a reduced price), and also to the communities bordering her own (at full market price).

THE COST – $3000 – Project has been FULLY funded! Thank you to everyone who gave to this project!
